STIRRING THE MELTING POT
As children we were admonished not to eat with our hands. But for at least one dish on the menu at The Turk, utensils are not necessary.
The restaurant brings Turkish food to a town that’s become a mecca for ethnic cuisine. That was one of the selling points of the area, according to the partners in this venture, Simon (Sinan) Maden and Tim Hicdonmez. “There are well-educated and well-traveled customers here,” Maden says.
Hicdonmez notes for the most part they didn’t have to “Americanize” dishes as Turkish food isn’t too spicy. Though he does admit that a yogurt drink flavored with salt may take some getting used to.
The menu features appetizers and entrees that are familiar—such as hummus and chicken shish kebab—and the unfamiliar—such as Lahmacun, the dish you can eat with your hands, which is dough topped with either beef or lamb and vegetables and herbs. There’s an array of Turkish beers and wines and a copper coffee urn where Turkish coffee is made.
The restaurant mixes elements of Turkish-themed design in the interior. “Our aim was to bring authentic Turkish cooking to a cozy, family-friendly restaurant in an area that is embracing food from around the world,” Maden says.
