Stepping into The Horse & Hound Inn is like stepping into the past—a genteel time of foxhunts and stagecoaches. For the past 20 years, that sense of a different era has served this mainstay well.

Seating is available in the cozy dining room where tables are dressed with linens for dinner, at the expansive bar or high tops in the pub room, or on the seasonal patio. The Horse & Hound offers old-fashioned ambience and contemporary food choices for both a couple seeking a romantic dinner or a family. Manager Steve Rosenschein says, “We’ve made a mark offering well-prepared and consistent food with an emphasis on service.” He notes that second-generation patrons make their way to the restaurant where they once sat in highchairs.

The restaurant offers classics such as duck and carved steaks, as well as phenomenal chicken wings and burgers. Bands perform most weekends, and on the last Thursday of every month there are Acoustic Open Jams. 

Rosenschein notes in the cyclical nature of restaurants, everyone rushes to fads (fondue, anyone?), but “there’s always a market for a classic.” And according to a sign in the restaurant, in 1829 it cost $1.12 to take a stagecoach from New York City to Cross River. No word on how long the trip was.
