FRESH AND FLAVORFUL
Coming full-circle is how Angela Baldanza describes the direction New Canaan’s Baldanza Market and Café is taking as it enters its third year of business.
She and her husband Sandy, Pound Ridge residents, opened the restaurant as a market, it became a full-fledged restaurant, and now a new venture, Baldanza Soup Kitchen, has them selling the café’s delicious soups at local markets, with a percentage of sales going to the Connecticut Food Bank.
The soup, and all the food at the restaurant, meets Baldanza’s mission statement of bringing “clean food with interesting flavor to the community,” says Angela.
The clean-food portion is reflected on the blackboard at the entrance that lists names of farms and vendors supplying the café during different seasons. The flavors are apparent in the recent additions of “power plates” with such ingredients as yellow and green spaghettini, Swiss chard, or hummus. For the less virtuous there’s Baldanza’s amazing bread pudding.
The café is decorated in what Baldanza terms “farm-to-table chic.” Whether you’re enjoying a coffee and buttery croissant or sipping an organic and/or biodynamic glass of wine while eating made-in-house pasta, at Baldanza you can imagine you’re at a European café.
